Purchase Your First Home with the KiwiSaver HomeStart Grant

Buying your first home is a massive milestone and goal for many Kiwis across the country. Unfortunately, the journey to securing a place to call your own isn’t always straightforward  – let alone easy. If you’re sick of visiting open homes, wasting time at auctions and spending hours trawling Trade Me, it could be the perfect time to talk to one of our New Home Consultants. Our team welcomes first time home buyers at all stages of the process to discuss what options are available and how we can help you get through the process faster – all the while minimising the headaches and hoops you have to jump through.

What should be a positive and exciting experience is too often tainted by ‘what if?’ scenarios and unanswered questions. Partnering with our experienced professionals equips you with the backing to explore possibilities with confidence. Our team’s mission is to bring awareness to the tools available for first home buyers; facilitating the achievement of actualising property ownership dreams.

In addition to our knowledge, Navigation Homes works with key professionals such as lawyers, mortgage brokers and property valuers. Our network can assist with priceless advice for purchasing a home for the first time. This includes consulting first-time home buyers on the process of accessing the KiwiSaver HomeStart grant and withdrawing from KiwiSaver for their first home purchase.

Get Into Your Brand-New Home Sooner With the KiwiSaver HomeStart Grant

KiwiSaver has two features to help you buy your first home. These are the KiwiSaver HomeStart grant and the KiwiSaver first-home withdrawal. Each of the two pathways has requirements and your eligibility will depend on your home buyer status and participation in the KiwiSaver scheme.

Requirements for the KiwiSaver HomeStart Grant

  • You must be over the age of eighteen
  • You must be a first-time home buyer
  • You must have contributed to your KiwiSaver fund for three years (there is a minimum contribution required)
  • Your annual income must be less than $85,000 before tax (for a single person) or less than $130,000 (for two or more people)
  • You need to have at least 10% of the deposit to purchase the home once you have received the grant
  • You will need to live on the property for at least 6-months post-purchase.

The KiwiSaver Homestart grant is an initiative that makes it easier for first-timers to buy a home. The grant provides eligible applicants with a grant of up to $5,000 for individuals and up to $10,000 for two or more eligible buyers to put towards the purchase of an existing/older home.

Alternatively, if you’re looking to purchase a brand-new home, the KiwiSaver HomeStart grant provides eligible first-home buyers with a grant of up to $10,000 for individuals and up to $20,000 for two or more eligible buyers to help with purchase costs.

At Navigation Homes we have several house and land packages available that may fit the criteria for the first home buyers throughout the country. Contact Navigation Homes in your area today to discuss getting into your new home sooner than you think.

For a better understanding of the process, you can find out more about the grant directly. Check out KiwiSaver’s HomeStart Grant information page here

Withdrawing Some of Your KiwiSaver Savings to Purchase Your First Home

As a KiwiSaver member, you may also be able to withdraw a portion of your savings to go towards purchasing your first home. This policy, which began in 2015, has helped many Kiwis afford the initial costs of buying their first property. If you meet the requirements, this is a fantastic way to speed up the purchase process and get into your new home as soon as possible.

Requirements for the KiwiSaver First-Home Withdrawal:

  • You must be over the age of eighteen
  • You must be a first-time home buyer
  • You must have contributed to your KiwiSaver fund for three years (there is a minimum contribution required)
  • You must leave $1000 in your KiwiSaver after you have made the withdrawal

In some cases, those who have purchased a property in the past may still be eligible for the KiwiSaver withdrawal.
